Selecting a PhD topic

A student can easily choose a Ph.D. topic, with the help of the mentor. It happens at times, that a student has an advisor who will have detailed research idea. The mentor can also give students a ready-made problem solution for their work. This work may straight away lead to defining the Ph.D. topic.

More often, though, students have to find a topic on their own. The student’s advisor will be accessible to converse it with the student offering the complete guidance, but will possibly not commence this process. As a result, it is always advisable that a student should take inventiveness and start searching for the topic. The selection of topic should start as early as possible say in the second year of the graduate school. It is not a good practice to wake up in the last year of studies, as a student can have a number of unrelated projects he/she worked on without any idea of the relevant topic.

A student must have some knowledge of research and guidance to choose a research topic. Additionally, one should always select a topic which will be

  • Considerable that much a student can write a minimum of 3 papers on it.

  • Is feasible in 2-3 year of timeframe.

  • Is approved by the advisor and the committee member.

The PhD. topic should be like that a student can keep on working over it for 2-3 years. If a student is not very much sure, it is better to spend some time finding out. It is almost unfeasible to change the PhD. topic without changing the advisor and the school, once the student have chosen the topic and passed the Ph.D. qualifying exam.

As a result, if a student doesn’t like the topic, then he/she can talk to the advisor as soon as possible.
